Supported Housing Week: Enabling independence across our communities

When we think about housing, we often think about bricks and mortar. But for many people, the right home can be life changing, providing the foundation they need to live safely, independently and as part of their community.

Our supported housing enables people leave hospital when they are ready, move on from homelessness, recover after difficult experiences, or live with greater choice and independence. This can mean having a home where they feel safe, can build routines, take part in local activities, stay close to people who matter to them and receive the right support from specialist organisations.

During Supported Housing Week, we are joining the National Housing Federation and housing organisations across the country to celebrate supported housing and highlight why safe, suitable homes with the right support are so important.

Sam’s story: proud to call Warwick Mews home

Sam has lived at Warwick Mews since May 2022. Since moving in, she has made her flat a place she is proud to call home.

Sam enjoys a busy social life. She spends time with her boyfriend, Edward, goes swimming with Mac Seals, listens to music, attends discos, plays bingo and takes part in activities at the Macclesfield Lifestyle Group four days a week. She also takes great pride in looking after her home. Her flat is welcoming, comfortable and well cared for, showing how important it is to have a place that feels truly your own.

Sam said:

“I love living here at Warwick Mews and I love my flat. The staff are really nice. I’m happy to show you around my house.”

Sam’s story shows how supported housing can give people more than a roof over their head. It can help people build independence, enjoy everyday life and stay connected to their local community.

Tracey’s story: Making a lasting difference to people’s lives

Tracey is the Registered Manager at Care4CE and supports our customers at Warwick Mews. Tracey told us:

“I have seen first-hand the transformative impact that supported housing has on individuals’ lives. It is far more than providing accommodation – it gives people a safe, stable home from which they can build their independence, develop meaningful relationships and become active members of their local community.”

“Supported housing plays a vital role within the wider accommodation strategy by offering people the right level of support in the least restrictive environment, enabling them to live as independently as possible whilst maintaining their health, wellbeing and quality of life.”

“Every day at Warwick Mews, we see the positive impact of supported housing, empowering people to build confidence, maintain their independence, take pride in their homes and remain connected to their community. We are incredibly proud of the outcomes achieved by our tenants and the dedication of our staff team, whose commitment and compassion help people reach their potential and live fulfilling lives.”

Lisa Dawson, Supported Housing Manager at Onward, added:

“At its heart, supported housing is about people. I am incredibly proud to lead Onward’s Supported Housing Team and to be part of a service that changes lives and strengthens communities every day.”
