The housing association owns part of it – but you’re living there, you decorate it, and you decide when to sell. Buying a percentage means a smaller deposit and smaller mortgage. For lots of people, it means that first important step on the housing ladder can be taken sooner. Usually, you can also carry on buying shares, to own it 100%.

It allows you to live in your brand-new home while paying a discounted rent, helping you save up for a deposit to purchase a home in the future. It is a great option for first-time buyers who are struggling to save and rent on the open market, at the same time.
With Rent to Buy, you rent a newly built home, usually at 20% below the market rent value for up to five years and put aside the savings towards a deposit.
At the end of the five-year period, you will be offered the chance to purchase the home, either outright or through Shared Ownership, and fulfil your dream of stepping onto the property ladder.
