Lidl Reveals Plans for New Store on Hattersley Retail Park

Lidl is to build a brand new store in Tameside as part of its ongoing expansion ambitions within the UK. The announcement comes as Lidl confirms that it has exchanged contracts with Maple Grove Developments, securing the new site.

The store, which will be located in Hattersley Retail Park on Stockport Road, represents a multi-million pound investment in the local area with Lidl committing to taking a unit with 1,794m² sales area. The supermarket will feature facilities such as an instore bakery, customer toilets and ample parking for both cars and bicycles.

Lidl UK’s Regional Head of Property, Nick Harvey, commented: “We are delighted to be opening a new store in Tameside, which marks another milestone in our ambitious store expansion programme. We’ve seen incredible demand for Lidl stores across the country and look forward to offering our quality products and incredible value to shoppers in and around Tameside.”

Andrew Dewhurst, Director of Maple Grove Developments said “Maple Grove Developments have appointed letting agents Brady Chartered Surveyors and Reid Rose Gregory.  This is an important milestone to reach for the project, with Lidl being one of our anchor stores.  We expect to be able to release names of other retailers coming to the park in the weeks ahead.”

Bronwen Rapley, CEO of Onward Homes, the local housing provider, said: “The Hattersley area is in the throes of a multi-million pound regeneration programme stimulated by an innovative partnership led by Tameside Council and Onward Homes. Onward Homes selected Maple Grove as its preferred development partner in 2016 having secured outline planning consent for the site in February 2015. The Lidl store will be a welcome addition for local residents.”

Robin Monk, Director of Place at Tameside Council, said: “Attracting a retailer of Lidl’s quality to the final phase of the new district centre is a direct result of our commitment, with Onward Homes and other partners, to secure investment for the comprehensive regeneration of Hattersley.”

“This will bring new retail choice and employment opportunities to the local area and will complement the major investment in new housing, transport infrastructure, community facilities and public realm improvements.”

Lidl UK has experienced continued growth over the years as consumers flock to the supermarket to discover its great value products – more than two thirds of which are British sourced – ranging from quality fruit and vegetables, to premium wines from its much coveted Wine Tour collections. Its ongoing success shows no signs of slowing, with the latest Kantar Worldpanel results highlighting Lidl’s continued growth in the UK with 10.3% increase in sales year on year and market share high of 5.3%.

The planned store in Tameside will add to Lidl’s existing store portfolio of 700, and will form part of the company’s growth plans which will see it open up to 50 new stores a year.
