Celebrating Diversity & Embracing Difference

To understand and meet the needs of our customers we know how important it is that we maintain an inclusive and diverse organisation and that our workforce is representative of our customer base.

We are committed to promoting equality of opportunity, as well as creating communities and working environments that are inclusive and free from discrimination or harassment.

We value diversity and recognise the benefits of employing a diverse workforce. As an employer we continue to invest in this area, and through our work in providing homes and services, we help ensure fair treatment for all members of the community regardless of race, ethnic origin, nationality, gender, disability, religion, marital status, maternity, sexual orientation, or age.

As an organisation we work with the following organisations to support us in our commitment to diversity and inclusion:

Onward are also proud members of the HouseProud Pledge scheme. You can read more on them below:

The LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge: A Commitment to Inclusion

Originally launched in 2019 by HouseProud, the LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge (formerly the HouseProud Pledge) was born out of research by the University of Surrey and HouseProud into the experiences of LGBTQ+ residents in social housing. The findings revealed that many LGBTQ+ people felt unsafe, lacked a sense of belonging, and were often overlooked or treated differently by their housing providers.

In response, the Pledge was created as a flexible framework for housing organisations of all sizes to demonstrate a genuine commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion. It sets out clear actions to improve visibility, representation, and support for LGBTQ+ residents.

In 2023, Stonewall Housing became the implementation partner for the Pledge, working alongside HouseProud to drive its impact across the sector. Decisions about the Pledge are guided by an Advisory Board made up of LGBTQ+ colleagues and residents.

To reflect its broader reach and purpose, the Pledge was renamed the LGBTQ+ Housing Pledge, a name that better communicates its mission and partnership to residents and providers alike.

At Onward, we’re proud to have achieved Pledge Pioneer status, recognising our commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion. By living our value of Respect and making the Onward difference, we’re helping to build communities where everyone feels empowered to be their best.
