New mural unveiled in Kirkdale marking a greener, empowered and united community

By working closely with its supply chain and local partners, leading North West housing association Onward Homes has gone beyond housing by championing a variety of community initiatives in Kirkdale, Liverpool.

As part of its energy efficiency programme, which is helping to make 400 homes in the area warmer and easier to run, Onward has collaborated with residents to deliver a range of projects that instil pride in the community and empower individuals to achieve their full potential.

In partnership with Liverpool City Council, Onward championed a new approach to waste management in response to feedback from its customers. The social landlord also collaborated closely with residents and Community Shop to revitalise a neglected greenspace. The transformed area now offers local people the opportunity to grow their own food and enjoy a dedicated wellbeing space.

These collective efforts culminated in the unveiling of a striking new mural on the corner of Leighton and Smeaton Street in Kirkdale. Created by Madeleine Pires, a dot-art artist, in collaboration with local residents, the mural stands as a vibrant symbol of community pride and unity.

Onward has also maximised its positive impact in the area through support that is enabling local people to be their best. This has included volunteering, donations and funding to tackle food and energy insecurity, contributions to local youth groups and various grants and equipment donated to enhance local facilities.

One of these local facilities is Everton in the Community’s 41 Goodison venue, which was transformed into a safe, inclusive space for hundreds of young people, enhancing support for those with complex needs through new digital resources and a revitalised garden area.

Through Onward’s strategic investment and the support of its contractor, Novus Property Solutions, who donated materials, funding and specialist skills, over £104k* in social value was generated through these projects that are making a positive local impact.

Joanne Danaher, Director of Housing and Home Ownership at Onward, said:

“By listening to what matters most locally and building on the strengths of our suppliers, we have delivered projects in Kirkdale that not only meet the needs of our customers but also pave the way for vibrant, long-term impact.”

“We are immensely proud to see how these initiatives have brought people together, transforming not just alleyways and green spaces, but also the spirit of the neighbourhood itself. Whether it’s the beautiful new mural, the revitalised gardens, or the support offered to local young people, every effort has been shaped by the voices of those living here.”

“We look forward to building on this momentum and continuing to support the community in collaboration with our local partners.”

Kevin Rhone, Head of Social Value and Customer Care at Novus Property Solutions added:

“Our work with Onward isn’t just about bricks and mortar – it’s about building futures. At Novus, we’re immensely proud to have delivered not only exceptional work but also meaningful social value that transforms lives and strengthens communities. This is progress with purpose, and together, we’re making a lasting difference.”

Lucy Byrne, Managing Director of dot-art, added:

“The Leighton Meadow mural is the latest local landmark created by the wonderfully talented Madeleine Pires, who is known for her work on the award-winning Flower Streets murals. We were delighted when Onward asked dot-art to bring this stunning artwork to life, and could see its huge value to the community. I am sure it will bring joy to residents for many years to come!”
